Summary
A short, enthusiastic practitioner’s take on Jev — roughly a three-minute read, with no benchmarks or measurements of its own. It is kept here for two things: a clean statement of why discarding generation is a gain rather than a loss, and the Jevals eval framework the author released alongside it.

The Core Argument
The framing is that a normal model asked “should I call the browser tool?” generates a sentence explaining its answer, when the caller needed only the decision. A System One model skips the prose and returns a distribution over the allowed answers instead.
The author’s sharpest line is about what that preserves rather than what it drops: you get the model’s uncertainty, instead of throwing it away when it commits to generated text. A generated “yes” carries no honest signal of how close the call was; a probability does. This is the same property recorded as Calibrated Relevance Probability, argued here from the agent-loop side rather than the ranking side.
He describes the model as a general-purpose classifier.
Proposed Use Cases
Six, of which two matter for this vault:
- RAG reranking — hand it a query and a chunk, get a relevance score, without spending a generative call per candidate. The idea Hev meets Jev and TypeSafe Cookbook - Re-ranking actually measure.
- Context engineering — should this memory stay, can this tool result be dropped, is this chunk worth retrieving? The argument is that scoring becomes cheap enough to judge context rather than govern it by heuristics (Clean Context, Context Engineering). This is the more novel suggestion of the two, and the one nobody in this vault has yet measured.
The remaining four — agent harness decisions with escalation of uncertain calls to a larger model, game NPC behaviour sampled from the returned distribution, computer-use loop checks, and evals — sit outside search, though the escalation pattern is the same Staged Judging shape that recurs across these notes.

The concrete output: Jevals, an eval framework using Jev as the judge, with the returned probabilities driving confidence gating and escalation of uncertain cases to a larger model.
Caveats
- No measurements. Nothing here is benchmarked; the value is the framing and the released tool.
- Member-gated. A Medium member-only story, so the full text is not publicly readable.
- Launch-week enthusiasm. Written days after release, by an author who also shipped a tool built on the model.
