Site-search logs are a direct, underused record of what visitors actually want and where they fail — “one of the biggest missed opportunities in UX research.” This is a UX-research framing of Search Observability.
What Logs Reveal (seven insight categories)
- Unmet needs — content gaps and navigation failures
- Non-existent content — demand for topics the site doesn’t cover
- Vocabulary mismatch — user terms vs. site language (drives Synonyms)
- Misspellings / poor results — search-quality issues (Spelling Correction)
- Blank searches — IA workarounds or technical problems
- Extended queries — user distress or abuse
- Numerical searches — missing product-lookup capability
Techniques
- Top ~1,000 query terms by frequency over 3–6 months
- Reconstruct sessions by identifier + timestamp
- Pull queries returning zero results and the longest queries
- Cluster queries by meaning (synonym discovery)
- Feed findings into IA, navigation, content, localization, “best bets,” and engine tuning
- Strip PII before sharing
